6th Annual Cochituate Cup

17-18 Cochituate CupWayland hockey hosted its 6th annual Cochituate Cup Pond Hockey tournament today – a tradition where Wayland hockey players pay tribute to their pond-playing predecessors with throwback jerseys sporting the same-styled “C” of the old semi-professional hockey team, the Cochituate Huskies. For the second year in a row, the boys wore jerseys with pink “C’s” in support of Andrea Cope, who is battling breast cancer. Andrea is the mother of former player Charlie Cope Jr. ‘14 and wife of former WHA president Charlie Cope Sr. As always, Wayland hockey would like to thank the following local businesses for each sponsoring one of the six teams: Steve Henley Memorial Fund, Mel’s Cafe, M.J. Henley Lawn Sprinklers, the Longfellow Club, M. Henley Snowplowing, and Inspired Blarney Freelance Writing.

A string of subzero temperatures made for perfect condition on Dudley Pond, but a a recent blizzard called for some shovels and snow-blowers to remove some snow; Thanks to all parents and players who worked hard to shovel off the pond to make two great rinks.

As always the games were very competitive. When the smoke cleared, the Green team of Coach Muzz, Coach Nicholas, and Jay Provost were the ones to hoist the Cochituate Cup, defeating the Maroon team of Joe Lyons, Aidan Bonner, Jimmy Paugh, and Jett Peter. With the double elimination format, the Maroon team pushed the then undefeated Green team to a second game in the finals, but could not defeat them twice. The Green team will have their names will be engraved on the cup just below the inscription that reads:
