Wayland hockey hosted its 5th annual Cochituate Cup Pond Hockey tournament today – a tradition where Wayland hockey players pay tribute to their pond-playing predecessors with throwback jerseys sporting the same-styled “C” of the old semi-professional hockey team, the Cochituate Huskies. This year, the boys wore jerseys with pink “C’s” in support of Andrea Cope, who is battling breast cancer. Andrea is the mother of former player Charlie Cope Jr. ‘14 and wife of former WHA president Charlie Cope Sr. As always, Wayland hockey would like to thank the following local businesses for each sponsoring one of the six teams: Steve Henley Memorial Fund, Mel’s Cafe, M.J. Henley Lawn Sprinklers, the Longfellow Club, M. Henley Snowplowing, and Inspired Blarney Freelance Writing.
Since the ponds never safely froze over this winter, the tournament was played at Kirrane Rink – an outdoor rink in Larz Anderson Park, Brookline. The venue proved to be a perfect plan B as the uncovered rink provided a great pond hockey feel.
As always the games were very competitive with many games being won by a single
goal. When the smoke cleared, the Pink team of Joe Lyons, Mike Jones, and Shane Henley were the ones to hoist the Cochituate Cup. The Pink team defeated the Green team of Coach Muzz, Coach Powers, and Aidan Bonner by a score of 5-4 to win the tournament. Mike Jones joins his brother Bobby as the second set of brothers to win the tournament.
The Pink team will have their names will be engraved on the cup just below the inscription that reads:
Cochituate Cup est. 2013
“On these frozen waters, we gather to show that fire and ice can coexist. Red with will and joy, we compete against our brothers for the right to hoist thee.”
The results were as follows:
1st Place – Pink
2nd Place – Green
Coach R. Murray
Coach R. Powers
3rd Place – Maroon
