Warriors Lose to Hanover in State Semi’s; Thank You Seniors!

cropped-DSC_5756-1.jpgBOURNE – The Warriors bowed out to the eventual state champion Hanover last Wednesday in the state semi-finals. Wayland lost by a score of 5-1, but the score was not indicative of the game, as it was 2-1 until late in the second period when Hanover scored with just under a minute to play in the frame. The high-powered forecheck and the physical play of the Indians wore down the Warriors who, with only 12 skaters, were gassed by the third period. Hanover was able to tack on two more in the third, when an injury to Scott McCarthy made a short-bench even shorter and Wayland was unable to mount a comeback. Hockey Night in Boston Online has a good summary of the game as well as a brief recap of the Warriors improbable playoff run and D3 North Sectional title.

From L to R: Joe Christakis, Jake Brady, & Bobby Jones

The Warrior will graduate three seniors in captain Jake Brady, alternate captain Bobby Jones, and alternate captain Joe Christakis. The senior class has represented both the town and the school well and have won two north sectional titles during their careers as well as a MVC/DCL league championship. Their skill, leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment to the team will be sorely missed. Thank you for all of your contributions to the program Jake, Bobby, and Joe!

Wayland Wins the North! Advances to State Semi-Finals

WOBURN – Riley Bonner proved to be the hero last night for the Warriors, scoring the overtime winner to send the capacity crowd decked out in orange and black into a frenzy with a 2-1 win over the defending state champion Watertown Red Raiders. The sophomore forward one-timed a Joe Lydon feed past Watertown’s goaltender to capture the Division 3 North Sectional for Wayland. Watertown struck first midway through the second period on a power play goal by Mike Giordano, but the Warriors would answer a few minutes later when sophomore forward Joe Lydon – who played his best game as a Warrior – took a Joe Christakis pass in the slot and ripped it past the outstretched legs of the Watertown goaltender. The third period offered back and forth action, with both teams jockeying for the lead. Wayland was called for a penalty late in the third period, but was able to kill off the very good Red Raiders power play to send the game into overtime, where Bonner would seal the victory. Goaltender Andrew Ludwig made16 saves in the effort, many of the point-blank variety to keep the game knotted at 1. This is the Warriors’ 3rd sectional title in 6 years. CHELMSFORD – The Warriors defeated an opportunistic East Boston team 7-3 in an eventful game. The score was not indicative of the game as it was 2-2 after the 1st period and the Warriors took a slight 4-3 lead into the 3rd. That’s when the Warriors pulled away, scoring three goals in the 3rd, sparked by sophomore Joe Lyons’ second of three goals. It was the first playoff hat trick by a Warrior player since Nick Morgan scored 3 against Lynn two years ago. Seniors Bobby Jones, Joe Christakis (goal and 2 assists each), and Jake Brady (3 assists) each had 3-point nights. Junior defenseman Christian Boschetto continued his excellent postseason play with a goal and an assist. Boschetto and defensive partner junior Scott McCarthy finished the night with a +3 rating. Sophomore Riley Bonner also scored in the effort. Junior goaltender Andrew Ludwig battled through flu-like symptoms to make 12 saves, none more important than a game-saving breakaway save early in the 3rd to preserve the Warriors’ one-goal lead. Additional coverage of the game can be viewed in this MetroWest Daily News article. The Warriors now advance to the North Sectional Finals. Details are below:

Opponent: Watertown

Wayland Beats Latin Academy, Moves On

CHELMSFORD – The Warriors struck midway through the first period on a Joe Christakis wrister to take the 1-0 lead, and they never looked back. With under a minute left to play in the first period, sophomore forward Joe Lyons took a feed from Bobby Jones, who had 3 assists on the night, and backhanded the puck by the outstretched leg of the goaltender to take a 2 goal lead into the intermission. Latin Academy started the second period with some extended pressure, but Wayland netminder Andrew Ludwig was up to the task. Ludwig made 16 saves in the effort and notched his 4th shutout of the season. Joe Christakis struck again, late in the second period, when he streaked down the right wing and ripped a short-side snap-shot high over the glove of Latin’s goalie for the 3-goal lead with assists going to Joe Orlandella and Christian Boschetto. Boschetto would finish out the scoring with a power play goal from the point midway through the third. The Warriors will advance to the D3 North Semi-Finals. Playoff information is as follows:

Opponent: East Boston

Wayland Advances to Next Round

WATERTOWN – The Wayland boys hockey team extended their season last night, scoring a hard-fought 4-2 victory over a very gritty Dracut team in a D3 North first round playoff game. Captain Jake Brady opened the scoring in the first period, converting a feed from sophomore Joe Lyons. Bobby Jones, a senior alternate captain, potted one late in the first to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead going into the intermission. The second period saw pressure from both teams, but the score remained 2-0 leading into a very eventful third period. Halfway through the third, sophomore Riley Bonner streaked down the left wing and ripped a tough angle shot just under the crossbar to make it 3-0. Dracut put on a late push, scoring two late goals to make the game interesting, but senior alternate captain Joe Christakis sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 40 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
