WAYLAND —The Wayland High boys’ hockey team ended its first week of play with a 1-1 record.
The Warriors opened up their season in impressive fashion, defeating perennial D3 powerhouse Shawsheen Tech 6-1. It didn’t take the Warriors long to get on the board, as junior Roby Williams scored just 18 seconds into the game. On the play, sophomore forward and assistant captain Peter Orlandella stripped a Shawsheen player of the puck before bolting up the ice and rifling a backhander onto the Rams netminder, who kicked the rebound directly to Williams for the conversion.
It was a long weekend for the Wayland and Wayland/Weston teams, as all three lost games. The varsity team couldn’t solve Newton South’s goaltender, losing 1-0 while outshooting the Lions by a margin of 39-13.
The junior varsity lost 4-1 to Westwood on Sunday.
The Wayland/Weston girls’ co-op lost to Natick 2-0 Monday evening. Freshman netminder Kylie Ham was impressive, making 31 saves in the contest.

The Wayland Boys’ Varsity team defeated Shawsheen Tech 6-1 on Thursday night in Billerica. Sophomore forward Scott Carvalho scored twice in the win. Sophomore forwards Peter Orlandella and Nick Morgan chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Junior Ben Boschetto turned away 12 of the 13 shots he faced.
The Warriors will play host to Newton South Saturday evening at 8:10 at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro.
The Wayland/Weston girls’ hockey program has added former Milton Academy and Thayer Academy coach Kevin Cleary. Cleary will join Coach Bill MacDonald.
According to MacDonald, “”Kevin brings a wealth of experience and comes from a system that has a reputation for developing its players and having tournament quality teams,” said MacDonald. “We are excited to have him join the Wayland/Weston hockey program.”

To kick-off their season, the Wayland High varsity squad took part in the Northstar Jamboree in Westborough. During their first period of play, the boys defeated Northbridge 4-0 in an impressive show of offense. Sophomore Scott Carvalho scored two goals, while Pat Gerjarusak and Joe Christakis each added one.
In their second period of action, Wayland tied Grafton 3-3 in a spirited period that saw the boys put furious pressure on the Grafton goaltender until the final whistle. Goals were scored by Pat Gerjarusak, Peter Orlandella, and Nick Morgan. Lucas Bastarache finished with 3 assists while junior captain Marcus Daisy was +4 on the day. Junior Ben Boschetto stopped 12 of 15 shots. The boys scored 7 goals and gave up 3 in their two periods of play.
They will open their season against Shawsheen Tech on Thursday at Hallenborg rink in Billerica at 8pm.
The boys varsity team polished all of Wayland High’s trophies and cleaned the trophy cases before practice Friday evening. They discovered many state championship trophies and even marveled at the Division 1A State Champion Football team from 2006 as well as the 1980 State Champion Lacrosse team that went undefeated. Trophies dated back to the 1940’s and the boys really got a sense of the tradition and history of Wayland athletics. They also noticed that one thing was missing: a boys’ state championship hockey trophy.
